I was fortunate enough to grow up with a dad that gardened. In my high school years especially, he had a garden almost as big as our backyard. The first time I saw a striped tomato, or a purple one, was in my own backyard.
We have been in our current home for over a year now, and I feel like the soil is just getting better and better! We have already been harvesting from our spring beds. We are having higher yields at this point in the season than we ever have gotten.
And even though I've had my own garden for the past 12 or so years, the feeling I get when I harvest is the same as the first time. I feel so sufficient and confident. I can produce food for my family! Yep- that never gets old.
What's in the spring garden:
kale
arugula (lots of arugula)
spinach
mini red romaine lettuce
mini green romaine lettuce
onions
carrots
snow peas
radishes
I am going to put in beets and swiss chard today, because I forgot to plant them initially. It is probably too late, but I never let that stop me!

Have you written any posts about raising backyard chickens? Jason has been wanting to do it for a year or two and I'm finally warming up to the idea. I've looked at coop designs but I'm curious about the day to day everything. (Email me if you can … mahlbrandt at gmail)
Planting already, how lovely! I can't wait to get my hands in the dirt, but it is still a few months off.
Looks like we're coming to the time of year when I really have to steel myself before I visit your blog. :-D We're still very wintery here. It's lovely to hear about your garden... wish I could visit it!
Katie- I wish you could come for a visit too! Get away from those cold winter days and bask in the Texas sun! Before said sun threatens to kill you in late May- October!
i have missed my garden sooo much these last two summers, that i threw caution to the wind and started one in the midst of construction. and i hope (for the first time) to try to garden year round once the beds are permanent. have you had much luck with beets? it's on my dream grow list.
What beautiful veggies, we just moved into our home with four chickens and half an acre. Its too late to start a garden here in central texas but I'm envious of yours! Inspiration for next year!
