egg count

Whenever someone mentions that they are casually thinking about getting backyard chickens, I enthusiastically tell them that they indeed SHOULD get chickens! Chickens are so easy to raise. They are less maintenance than a dog, and they bless you daily with delicious eggs! I have been trying to keep track of the eggs being laid around here for the past month. From March 13- April 13 our four chickens (3 full grown, 1 bantam) have laid 57 eggs (and that doesn't even count all the eggs Buddy has broken while on egg collecting duty)! I think that's pretty great for a small backyard flock!

yay! so glad to hear this. i am so new to chicken mamma-ing and am shocked at how fast my babes are growing. my white leghorns are turning white with feathers already, losing their yellow fluff!

I lovelovelove my chickens and all the fresh eggs. I also love the other benefits-- bug control being the biggest one, since we let them free-range over our (small) property. However, lately I'm reeeeeally frustrated with their downsides-- poop all over everything, hidden eggs everywhere, chickens in the road, chickens in my garden, concentration-camp style fencing to keep them OUT of planted and mulched areas, a five-year old who is terrified of an aggressive rooster... sigh. Can't win 'em all, I guess.

But I still love the eggs and bug-control and just the sheer entertainment they provide. :-)
